CULTURAL MAPPINGS OF MEXICO CITY
THE CHALLENGE
Create a drift journal that summarizes your experience in Mexico City (CDMX) during the three-week study abroad program: Cultural Mappings of Mexico City. The record can be written, photographic, recorded sound, filmed, found, etc.
THE APPROACH
Walls around CDMX are plastered with posters boasting concerts, comedy shows, and retail sales. After passing these advertisements on foot, via taxi, and at metro stations daily, this medium quickly emerged as the perfect way to represent my interaction with the city. I selected key iconography and sampled colors from the sites we visited that speak to these significant periods in Mexican history.
Red: Wings of the feathered serpent (Aztec pyramids in Teotihuacan)
Blue: Water from a pre-colonial fountain (Condesa)
Green: Playground near Tlatelolco (site of the 1968 student massacre)
Pink: Rosa Mexicano; established in 1949 as part of national identity
